On Sunday, June 21st, the sun will rise over Sendai around 4:00am., and will continue to shine until 7:00pm. In fact, it will be the longest “day” of the year! Known as the summer solstice (日本語にすると「夏至」), it is the day when the northern hemisphere is closest to the sun. In many northern countries — like my home, Alaska — this is a big day for parties and barbeques as we celebrate the midnight sun!
Midnight sun (白夜) actually occurs every night in Alaska from May until September. Because the days are very long, most people have a lot of energy and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, boating, and fishing until very late in the evening. This Sunday — the day of the summer solstice — sunrise in the city of Fairbanks, Alaska is at 2:57am, and sunset is at 12:48am (翌日0:48), so there’s a lot of extra time to enjoy! In downtown Fairbanks, the Midnight Sun Festival will start at noon and continue until 1:00am; around 35,000 people are expected to gather there to eat good food, drink, listen to live music, and play games.
