In response to a question from ‘sunny’, here’s how we usually use ‘almost’.
- Mistake: “Almost Japanese people have black hair.”
- Good: “Most Japanese people have black hair.”
‘Almost’ means ‘nearly’. If you understand how to use ‘nearly’, you should be fine with ‘almost’.
Examples of how to use ‘almost’
- I had an accident when I was young and I almost died.
- I have almost enough money to buy another beer. Can you lend me 20 yen?
- Almost all of my friends are Canadian.
Sometimes, instead of ‘almost’, you should use ‘most’, ‘most of’ or ‘mostly’.
Examples of ‘most’, ‘most of’ and ‘mostly’
- Most dogs have tails.
- Most of the people I know have laptop computers.
- Most of Japan is mountainous.
- I mostly drink beer, but sometimes I drink red wine.

‘almost’と’most’・・・この2つの言葉の使い方の誤りが、英語を学ぶ日本の生徒さんによく見られます。以下を見てみましょう。
almost ; ほとんど、ほぼ、もう少しで・・・etc.
- 誤った使い方；「もう少しで日本人は黒髪だ。」
- 正しいのは（mostを使って）；「ほとんどの日本人は黒髪だ。」
そう！’almost’は’nearly’と同じ意味なんですね。’nearly’の使い方を考えていただければ、’almost’の使い方も大丈夫ですね。
正しい’almost’の使用例
- I had an accident when I was young and I almost died.
- 私は若い頃事故にあって、もう少しで死ぬところだった。
- I have almost enough money to buy another beer. Can you lend me 20 yen?
- もう一杯ビールを買うにはちょっとお金が足りないなぁ。20円貸してくれる？

- 私の友達のほとんどはカナダ人です。
‘almost’の代わりに、’most’、’most of’、または’mostly’を使った方がいいことがあります。
‘most’, ‘most of’, ‘mostly’ の使用例
- Most dogs have tails.
- ほとんどの犬にはしっぽがある。
- Most of the people I know have laptop computers.
- 私が知っているほとんどの人はラップトップコンピューターを使っている。
- Most of Japan is mountainous.
- 日本のほとんどが山地だ。
- I mostly drink beer, but sometimes I drink red wine.
- 私はたいていはいつもビールを飲むけれど、たまに赤ワインも飲むよ。
つまり、皆さんがよく使う「ほとんどの～は」と言いたい場合は、mostの方が適しているということですね。almostはnearlyと同じで、「ほとんど終えた、もう少しで～するところだ」のような、達成度合いを意味することが多いのです。
